Recently we heard the ground breaking news about Mario Vargas Llosa. He was awarded the biggest honor of his life – a Nobel Prize for unmatched literary contributions. However, seconds later some heads started bobbing, all giving the notion that the prize wasn’t deserved.
The Swedish literary critic – Ulrika Miles was among the most prominent people, who opposed the move. She said, “I am really angry, the authorities have surely overlooked the judging criterion. Llosa is a non socialite; he was practically lost when he became a neo liberal.”
As much as the idea of giving Nobel Prize to Llosa was appreciated in the first few days, there was an equal sense of sadness in the preceding weeks. The news media noticed former Nobel Prize winners, such as; Wislawa Szymborksa, Gunter Grass, Harold Pinter and Jose Saramago, all saying one thing;
“Mario Vargas Llosa should have been disqualified from the Nobel Prize nominations list. It was a mistake.”
Journalists call Llosa a traitor. During the post 80’s period, this writer came out against socialism and ran for the Peruvian Presidency at one occasion. Opposition party members mock Llosa as a person with cold heart and stone gaze, never too much interested in taking sympathy on the poor and the oppressed.
