GeForce GTX 480 Is the Latest Powerful GPU

To all those Ladies and Lentlemen of the high profile gaming community: Say Hello to the latest and the most up to date powerful GPU.

We are talking about the GeForce GTX 480 that just got launched with an added support of an all new Fermi architecture. Although, I haven’t had a chance (read – didn’t have enough money) to test this little baby, but here is what I have heard about it so far:

• What’s the official number of transistors?
o Nvidia announced more than 3 billion transistors on the GTX 480 and it turns out that those tiny transistors are included in every GF100 GPU.

• Clock Domains:
o As stated by Nvidia – a 700 to 607 MHz engine clock is going to be embedded in GTX 480. I am not so sure about the parts that specifically run at these clock speeds but except for the Shader core, all other core units are running at least 700 MHz

• Regarding Load/Store units:
o The GTX 480 has 16 per Shader multiprocessors so it means that there will be 256 for the whole chip and in case of GTX 470, there will be 240 of those multi Shader processors.

• FMAs and all is fine, what about more transcendental functions?
o The Fermi architecture in Nvidia’s opinion has an array of transcendental ops and texture interpolation based hardware devices. All of them are separated and this time, there are 4 transcendental units per 32 ALUs. It is 2:1 change vs. the previous generation of Nvidia graphics cards.

Some of you are not aware of all the tough technical terms about Nvidia Graphics cards or in general. It is my observation that when it comes to games, we all just jump to graphics settings and level of visuals without even knowing the type of technology that is installed in our card. But it definitely pays to know some details about GPUs in general and it saves a hell lot of trouble when you are out in the market, to buy a new high quality 3D card.
