It has been observed of late that a large number of Malaysians are duped by fake astrologers regularly. The truth is not always pleasant to hear and these gullible people resort to these fake soothsayers despite persistent media exposure on them.
In a recent study conducted by A University of Malaya, it was revealed that there are about 300 urban Malaysian Indians who frequently went to astrologers for consultation. It has been discovered that at least half of them were cheated by these astrologers under the promise of rendering remedies.
There are a number of people who have said that fortune telling is helpful as it helps them to shape up the future. There are a number of people who believe that astrological guidance is very essential for planning life and future activities. Most of the people who are consulting these astrologers are urban professionals that wish to excel in life. Moreover, these professionals mostly from Indian origin value astrological influence on their lives and this is the reason why they resort to seeking guidance from them. As the above cases of unscrupulous astrologers surfaced the University conducted a study in Johor Klang Valley and Perak to investigate into the influence of astrology. Recent studies conducted by the University also suggested that the average Malaysian spends about RM 1,000 to know about the future.
It has been observed that most of these fortune tellers resort to palm reading that is a practice where the soothsayer forecasts the past, present and future of a person by reading the predictions in the form of an ancient text on a palm leaf. Palm reading was popularized in the late 1980’s and a large number of Indian astrologers who proclaimed themselves as palm readers arrived on Malaysian shores. They have been duping many people since.
Awareness among the people is the need of the day to avoid being cheated.
