Mozilla Thunderbird Announces New 3.1 Release

Developers at Mozilla have today announced the release of the new Thunderbird version 3.1. The Thunderbird program offers email and news to clients under the code name “Lanikai”. The popular cross platform email program is used worldwide by businesses and home users. The newest update of the program includes many new features including stability and memory improvements.

The new version of Thunderbird 3.1 is based on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform. It features a brand new updated saved files manager that displays the downloaded files via email to the user’s computer. Another new feature is the Quick Filter Toolbar. This is aimed at making it quicker and simpler for users to search for different terms, tags, starred emails, and address book contacts.

Other new changes include adding hundreds of ISP settings to the Mail Account Set up program. Also included are improved Personas theme support and ease of interface design changes. The addition of the Migration Assistant makes in simpler for all Mozilla users to upgrade the program from the previous version. This means that upgrading reminders will be on autopilot in the future so no more out dated software. This is a real plus for users who still have the 2.x version of Thunderbird. Mozilla encourages all of its users to upgrade to the latest version to receive the most benefits from the program.

For more detailed information about the release see the notes on the Mozilla Developer Center blog. This features the full release notes.

Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 is available to download on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux systems.

Thunderbird binaries are released under the Mozilla Thunderbird End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public License, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.

“This is a much improved version of the previous Thunderbird and includes many great new features.”
