YouTube Wins in the Lawsuit against Viacom

Google has finally won the 3 year lawsuit with Viacom. Viacom previously sued YouTube, a website owned by Google for intentional copyright infringement.

Viacom told the judge that YouTube published more than 160,000 clips that were taken from their entertainment show. These clips were viewed for over 1.5 billion times. The U.S. district court gave the victory to Google because of the safe harbor clause stated in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Viacom based its ground that Google purposely purchased YouTube without caring that it contains the copyright infringement material. Viacom asked the judge to offer a compensation of $1 billion for the damages it caused.

Viacom pointed out that the staffs have to review the content before publishing it on YouTube. Edward Naugton stated that he never believe that the victory will be the beginning of a series of litigation.

Google had purchased YouTube for $1.8 billion in October 2006. The ruling of the lawsuit case between YouTube and Viacom happens a few days after Veoh becomes bankrupt. Band stated that YouTube won the lawsuit against Viacom because it is owned by the most famous internet brand, Google.

During the past few months, there has been many quarrelling between YouTube and Viacom. YouTube complained that Viacom had underwritten secret programs that have the ability to upload illegal content and cause bigger copyright problem.

On the 23rd of June 2010, Judge Louis Stanton has rejected Viacom’s lawsuit through a summary judgment. The loss of the lawsuit causes Viacom to lost $1 billion to Google. Viacom has stated that it will be appealing the copyright infringement complaint against Google again.

Google stated that the winning of the lawsuit against Viacom is an important victory for everyone in the world. According to Google, YouTube allows people from around the globe to upload and share their experiences with other people.
