Google working on smartphones which translate languages

GoogleGoogle Inc announced it has been planning for smartphones capable of translating languages to be released in a few years time.

The phone device will practically act as an interpreter and will translate spoken words from one language to the desired one. While Google acknowledges the difficulty in doing so due to the variance in accents, pitch and voice, the search engine giant is diligently working on a phone which can adapt to the user’s speech and style of conversation.

Google has a translation website which currently works for 52 of the world’s close to 6,000 languages but having the ability to translate a text is much easier than working on translation based on voice.

I wish Google well but, as a linguist, I’m not convinced that they are aware of the enormity of the task that faces them.

I advocate a non-technological solution, i.e. wider use of the planned international language Esperanto. At least we know it works.
