IDC, a research firm, announced smartphone sales in the last quarter of 2009 reached record high with Apple’s iPhone showing the biggest increase. According to IDC the smartphone shipments increased 39% from the previous year to reach just over 54 million devices.
The biggest growth was witnessed by Apple which saw the iPhone sales rise almost 98% to a figure close to 8.7 million. Despite this tremendous growth in sales, Apple’s iPhone still trails Nokia sales and RIM who occupy the first two positions respectively.
Nokia sold just under 21 million devices while RIM which is the manufacturer of the BlackBerry phone sold around 10.7 million units.
