Apple Inc. announced it sold a record 8.7 million iPhones in the quarter ending December 31. The sales were up from 7.4 million devices sold in the previous quarter with the increase given a considerable boost by the introduction of the iPhone into the Chinese market.
The number of iPhones sold for the quarter ending December 31 of last year was double the amount sold the same quarter in 2008. The doubling in sales is due to the popularity of the iPhone but Apple is facing increased competition from RIM (BlackBerry phones), Google (Nexus One) and Motorola (Droid).
