Nokia taking on Google with free GPS for smartphones

NOKIAThe Finnish mobile giant Nokia has released its newest version of Ovi Maps service which provides voice directions for both driving and/or walking. The service is free of charge and comes months after Google launched its updated version of Maps Navigation for the Android platform. Considering the timing and the nature of the service, Nokia’s move is seen as a step to challenge Google.

Nokia’s navigation service will be offered in an impressive 46 languages, will have details maps of some 180 countries and provides turn-by-turn voice directions in 74 countries.

Nokia has made it clear this is the only service for both vehicles and pedestrians and negates the need for a separate navigation device in cars. Of course Nokia also stress on the fact the service is free of charge.

According to the latest numbers some 27 million people use the navigation optionĀ on their mobile phones. This new version will increase the number of users without any doubt.
