YouTube Piggy Bank Sounds Hollow- Google Hopes for a Change

Google is hoping to find a way to make money from its unprofitable video sharing site YouTube.

The ad broker is trying to convince copyright holders to subscribe to its service. Presently, there are only about a thousand media makers on the books of YouTube and it’s been more than two years since the free “Content ID” scheme was launched.

Google gave a Content Id presentation for a few tech hacks at its headquarters in Victoria, London. The timing of the presentation was very apt; twenty four hours after three executives from the Europe management team were given suspended sentences for the breach of Italian privacy laws. The video showed some school boys bullying a kid with Down’s Syndrome.

The company has made plans for a system to quickly return ownership of any video clip to the creator of the video itself.

This fingerprint technology supporting YouTube’s Content ID provides 3 policies that could be applied to the audio or video media of a right holder: block the content, track viewing metrics, or convert it into a cash-spinner.
