What king of a man was Laurent Fignon? Well, he was the number one bicycle champion and also an intellectual giant with unbeatable vigor, strength and determination.
At the age of 15, Fignon started off as a kid who could do a little more than keeping up with his cyclist buddies. The only good thing those late hours of football games did for him was to bless him with amazing stamina. The rest of the stuff is just like a story book.
Somehow, Fignon developed an affinity for cycles and despite of the usual tantrums from his family, he was determined to be a racer. He’d sneak off on his dad’s Vigneron – a superlight bike with elegant tubing. A couple of months later, he joined his first race at Vigneux-Sur-Seine – over 50Km. Fignon won it by a long shot and there was no end to his career from that points onwards.
Flash forward a couple of years later; Fignon has a number of Tour De France titles to his credit. At the age of 50, he still used to think that he could take the world by a storm. He was wrong, his health was deteriorating just like the way he used to swish past his rivals.
In 2008, he was looked after by his second wife: Valerie. During that time period, he used to coach young cyclists. Often times, he’d volunteer to take his fans through guided tours up the infamously grueling ascents of Pyrenees.
Lucky for Fignon, his wife was by his side during those last moments. The guy will always be remembered as an undisputed champion of Tour De France.
