The tremendous increase in data usage and texting has been something of a predictable outcome given the growing number of wireless users who own iPhones, BlackBerry or other smartphones and mobile devices. The key elements behind the remarkable growth in surfing the web on mobile devices and sending/receiving text messages range from the practicality of accessing the internet on the go as well as staying updated on the latest news and keeping in close touch with friends and relatives.
Businesses obviously have increased their use of smartphones as well which shows the increase in data usage can be attributed to both personal and to a lesser extent business use. The numbers between 2007 and 2009 reveal a decent increase as shown by the fact 24% of Americans accessed the web on their mobile phones in December 2007 compared to 35% of Americans doing so in December 2009.
The increase was visible in the multimedia and picture messaging usage as well with the numbers more than doubling between from 4.7 billion in June 2008 to 10.3 billion in June 2009. The great increase in messaging obviously affects texting as well which witnessed remarkable growth from 75 billion to 135.2 billion text messages between 2008 and June 2009.
The trend of increased data usage will certainly continue with the presence of social networking sites as well as the need to access the web on the go for various reasons.
