In terms of visuals, Gmail may look like a placid plate of plaster, but it does offer some really neat user friendly features. Recently, Google announced a new mode of support of Gmail users; they’ll be able to Drag & Drop email attachments out of the desktop, onto their browser window.
BUT here is a small catch: the offer stands valid only for Google Chrome users for now. Back in April 2010, the enhancement was offered in the form of the Drag and Drop support from browser window to desktop and the feature was usable on all popular browsers.
However, the new enhancement is a clear indication of something which says:
• Google is using a specific sauce that only works on the Google Chrome browsers.
Some individuals deem browser specific features to be a big no-no in the world of open web development. Many a times, there are developers who feel restricted while developing applications for browsers because of certain limitations, such as the one we are discussing right now. Those developers do have a point, but then again, entities like Gmail are trying to be exclusive to give a promotional support to Chrome for now.
Gmail is still unveiling new features. Moreover, their release happens steadily. Gmail can be regarded as an exemplar of the iterative model used for web app development. Every few weeks we can witness new features, sometimes changes can be observed in one or two browsers. One should not forget about the mobile version of Gmail that is also updated frequently so as to use new capabilities in the Mobile Safari as well as Android browsers.
The drag-and-drop is a new feature that is available in Gmail for Chrome users. Now you are able to see a little tooltip, due to which you can view OR drag to your desktop in order you want to save it.
